Break-First
So, I was scrolling through my phone, looking through food photos (I have about 1000) and then I realized that I have never written a post about food on the blog. Tsk tsk tsk. For shame. What kind of self-proclaimed foodie am I? A breakfast loving one!
Breakfast would definitely be one of my favourite meals to make and to eat. It’s definitely the most important meal of my day, no matter how late I end up eating it. I usually try to start my day with tea and fruit before I get to actually eating the meal and sometimes fruit happens to be a part of the meal.
I love breakfast dishes from traditional Jamaican ones (ripe and green plantains, breadfruit, fried dumplings, rundown, callaloo, ackee) to Continential options (always say yes to croissants) as well as American versions (omelettes, pancakes, waffles). I love all of them and I love playing around with different combinations.
I think have to do a whole separate post for Jamaican favorites, mostly because I tend to make them alongside my parents and I’m still in training. When I have to make my own breakfast, which is more often than not I usually go for some form of yogurt bowl or something with eggs.
I’m big on yogurt bowls because they are easy, can be made ahead of time and the combinations are limitless. My pictures have also told me that Sunshine Snacks should really sponsor me. I use their peanut granola in all my bowls. I prefer granola with yogurt but from time to time I will have it with oat or almond milk.
My bowls usually involve some variation of greek yogurt, fruit, coconut, chia seeds, flax powder, nuts and of course the aforementioned granola. I go for whatever fruit is seasonal so right now I’m having a lot of mango. My farm link has advised me that peaches and strawberries should be on their way in soon so I am quite excited about that.
When I am feeling for something savoury , I go for eggs. I prefer scrambled (basic I know) but I also love a good omelette (the Marlin Omelette from Tea Tree Creperie is an absolute favourite) or frittata. Breakfast sandwiches are my go to when I have to carry my breakfast to the office. I’ve been trying to lessen my bread intake but these everything bagels were the truth, I do believe this sandwich was a fried egg, salmon cream cheese, sriracha and avocado. Yum!
Surprisingly, I’ve actually been eating less while working from home and breakfast often ends up being eaten pretty close to lunchtime. I am however inspired to revisit some of mainstay meals, especially when everything else feels so strange. Familiar flavors do tend to bring a feeling of comfort.
Has your diet changed while social distancing? Are you cooking more or snacking more?
