WFH

This month marks the third month that I have been “working from home” and I’m still not sure I’ve got the hang of it. If you’re expecting a post about how to make the best of your day while working remotely….this may not be the one. I am barely making it through as it stands.

But we press on, because as each day passes, it appears that this may become a permanent situation for me so I need to get a handle on it.

I’ve read a ton of posts and blogs and videos on how to best work from home, “dress up for your day”, “find a spot where you can work undisturbed” , “separate your home space from your work space”…blah blah blah. It’s not that the advice is bad, it’s just that I practically live in my bedroom, I have no undisturbed space and I can’t even summon the energy to even think about putting on work clothes. What’s a girl like me to do?

drumroll please

I do what works. This has changed several times over the course of the last three months mind you and I am sure it will change again. The first month felt like torture, the activities were coming with the swiftness and I would be on calls or virtual meetings for most of the day. I had no comfortable chair and no table. I worked for a good week or two sitting on my yoga mat on the floor. I do not recommend. When I realized that this wasn’t going away anytime soon, I got a chair and a little fold up table. I’m currently using the chair far more than I do the table. Despite the rollercoaster it has been, there are however a few things that I have done that has been working…for now :-

  1. Wake up with enough time to do a few minutes of reading or journalling. Those few minutes of calm really help to set the tone.

  2. Spread my bed and spray a citrusy scent around the room to get me energized for the morning.

  3. Shower and get “dressed”. While I am not going to put on work clothes (can’t get things dirty that I do not have enough water pressure to wash) I do put on a comfy shorts set or house dress and keep a nice shirt close by just in case I have a video call.

  4. Make my tea and put it my favorite travel mug, so that it doesn’t get cold while I am sorting through emails.

  5. Write a to do list. Mind you, I don’t do one every day (maybe every other day) but I do try to at least start the week off with one. I’ve also been using my mini blackboard to keep track of things I need to remember.

  6. Try to eat on time. This one is a work in progress, being at home throws my appetite off kilter and I am still trying to get my eating schedule on track. I try to start each day with fruits which holds me over until my appetite wakes up and I feel like eating.

  7. Know when to take breaks. I do this a couple times throughout the day, do a little walking around, go water my plants, take a few photos outside, do a crossword , whatever. Just something to get my brain jumpstarted.

  8. Log off and change the mood. Working from home blurs the lines and the feeling of being “home”. When I am done for the day, I put away my laptop, notebooks mouse, lap desk , everything. I then try to change the mood by perhaps lighting a candle or some incense. I am very driven by scents so I have been using them to separate the ways in which I use my space. For bed time, I also spray the room with lavender to relax and get in the mood for sleep.

It appears that working for home is my current and future reality so I am trying to make the best of it.

How are you holding up?

Love and Light,

UltraRush
